Network Tips

Protecting Your Network’s Data

The most valuable component of your network is your data. How much is this data worth: customer databases, accounts receivable, invoices, e-mail address books, and proposals? To place a value on your data imagine the costs of recreating your data.  Because the value of your data is so high, you must protect it by implementing a successful data backup strategy.

We believe the most effective backup strategy is simple one.  The easier it is to backup your data the more likely it will occur on a regular basis. Overly complex backup procedures are a roadblock to consistent tape backups.

Key Elements of a Successful Data Backup Strategy

1.     Store all critical data on the file server.

2.     Run nightly backups of all data on the file server.

3.     Automate the backup process with industry standard software.

4.     Backup all the data on a single tape to simplify the process.

5.     Store tape backups off site at least weekly.

6.     Verify your backups are valid by restoring a test file monthly.

7.     Backup your data and verify your data backup before any upgrades to applications, operating system upgrades or system patches.

8.     Periodically clean the tape drive with a cleaning cartridge.

9.    Don't forget to backup E-mail. This requires a software agent.
